OUR ADVENTURE CONTINUES 001

"A LACKLUSTER START"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on January 22, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

Once Harold and I realized that we couldn't keep up with the breakneck speed of Variety Smack, we took a step back and thought about what we wanted to do moving forward.

In the end we decided to reboot the strip with a new name and new comics.

And so I present to you, the first comic from the new strip called Our Adventure Continues.

The thing that I love most about this strip is that, despite the fact that Harold and I have never actually been in the same room with each other, this is pretty much how we decided back then that we were gonna do a web comic together. There was no planning, nothing was scheduled out, no outlines, we just had a very basic idea and we just ran with it.

Harold and I would come up with the ideas for the strips, I'd do most of the writing, and Harold would do the art.

I'd help with flatting and at one point I lettered the strips, but Harold did all the line work and shading and all that as well as most of the lettering.

All in all we did close to 100 strips, but then life, as often happens, closed in on us and we realized we just didn't have the time to really continue with the strip.

And, if I'm being completely honest, and I think I am, while we'd get the occasional feedback, we didn't get a lot, which makes one feel like either no one was reading them, or if they were, they weren't enjoying them.

But recently, Harold and I have been talking about the possibility of bringing the strip back, because, again, if I'm being honest, I think we both rather miss it.

In other words, if you want Harold and I to get the band back together and create more comic strip fun, please say so by leaving a comment below.

VARIETY SMACK 015

"THE RESOURCING OF HUMAN BEINGS"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on May 14, 2012

I had planned on doing a number of strips like this in which the Steeven character has trouble understanding what the letters in initialisms stand for and so then spews forth many various possible options and never coming close to the correct words.

But here's the thing. I have never quite decided that the character's issue stems from a true lack of understand, or if he knows exactly what HR stands for and he just thinks he's funny.

You decide.

Until then, here are some other words HR might stand for:

Hamburger Radio
Hanoi Rocks
Halibut Rancher
Handkerchief Radish
Handle Representative
Help Rope
Human Raptor
Harbinger of Ricotta

VARIETY SMACK 014

"THE SPELLING MISTAKE"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip is from 2012 but was never before published

This is an interesting strip, but only because when we rebooted the comic and started over as Our Adventure Continues we used this very strip. Except Harold redrew it for Our Adventure Continues because the wording changed. That will make more sense when we get to that strip later on down the line.

Anyway, this strip is based on actual events. When I originally wrote the strips in which Rabid Ninja Zombie Wildebeasts are involved, I spelled Wildebeest incorrectly. But, as the strip explains, I managed to justify the error.

VARIETY SMACK 013

"NOT THE RETURN YOU WERE HOPING FOR"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip is from 2012 but was never before published

This strip was meant to be published on May 10, 2012. I know this because it was, as the strip says, twenty-three weeks after the previous strip was published, which was when we had gone on hiatus.

Now, I don't recall why this strip was never published, in fact, there are two others after this one that, as far as I can tell, we had created to continue with Variety Smack, but were, as with this one, never published.

I just can't recall why.

What I can tell you is that the final strip, number 15, the last one we did for Variety Smack, was set to land on May 14. But again, it did not.

After that we walked away from Variety Smack and began planning our next venture. More on that later.
